Raw Feeding Guide

Our raw feeding guide will help you understand the advantages and disadvantages of feeding a raw diet.

Sometimes it’s hard to know how to do the right thing for our pets, dry food, wet food, commercially bought or homemade, there are so many choices and many different opinions.

Over the past few years, raw feeding has become increasingly popular. But there are still a lot of confusing arguments both for and against raw feeding that can be a real minefield.

WHAT IS RAW FEEDING?

Raw feeding is exactly what it sounds like – feeding your pet raw ingredients, rather than the traditionally cooked food.
Raw dog food can be homemade, store-bought, freeze-dried, or dehydrated. A raw diet usually includes organ meats, muscle meat, whole or ground bone, raw eggs, dog-safe fresh fruits and vegetables.

WHY FEED A RAW DIET

Owners that feed raw diets want the dog's food to closely resemble what their wild ancestors and do so because they see it as being a more “natural” option to traditional dog food.

Advocates will state their dogs have shinier coats, healthier skin, improved dental health, increased energy, and smaller stools.

Should if feed homemade or commercial raw food?

Raw feed can either be homemade or commercially prepared and packaged, often bought frozen and thawed prior to feeding. Making sure your dog has the correct nutrients for your pet at its specific life stage is very difficult and should only be done with the advice of your vet or nutritionist.

TRANSITION TO RAW FEEDING

Change

If your dog doesn’t have a sensitive tummy, and has no known food allergies, they are likely to be able to manage a swift changeover from their previous diet to a raw food diet.

Slow and steady

For dogs with sensitive tummies, begin by feeding 75% of their current food with 25% raw and wait until they are stable on this, then move to a 50%/50% mix, again waiting for signs that they are comfortable on this, before progressing to 25%/75%, and then finally 100% raw.
